How to Manage an Oral Injury That is Bleeding
Posted on 3/20/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Any dental emergency such as injury to the teeth or gums may be serious and should never be ignored. Dental problems that are ignored when they happen only increase the risk of permanent damage and the need for more extensive and expensive treatment at a later time. Some Common Dental Injuries and What to Do Toothaches are clearly the most common dental emergency. If you cannot get into your dentist right away, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss to remove any lodged food. Apply a cold compress if your mouth is swollen, and above all else avoid putting an aspirin against the gum of your tooth as it will cause a burn on your tissue. Chipped or broken teeth are next on the list. Do what you can to save any of the broken pieces, rinse the mouth with warm water. If there is any bleeding try and apply a piece of gauze to the area for 10 minutes or so until the bleeding would stop, and then apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth, near where the broken or chipped tooth was to keep any swelling down and to help relieve any pain. Objects caught between your teeth can also be fairly painful. First and foremost, try using dental floss to gently and carefully remove the object. If you can't get the object out, call your dentist right away. Above all, never use a pin or sharp object to poke at the stuck object as you could be at risk to cut your gums. Soft tissue injuries which could include the tongue and cheek, gums, and lips that could result in bleeding. To help control the bleeding rinse your mouth with a mild salt-water solution and moisten a piece of gauze or tea bag and apply pressure to the bleeding site for about 15 to 20 minutes. Call our office right away if you experience any of these injuries or anything else such as loose brackets and bands on your braces, or an abscess, broken braces or wires, or even a lost crown or filling. We take your dental health and hygiene seriously and are here to help in every situation....
