Why Your Teeth May Hurt Even Without Cavities

Posted on 4/20/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Why Your Teeth May Hurt Even Without Cavities You brush your teeth, floss, and see your dentist, but still you have aching teeth. There are a few possibilities for this annoying problem. You may have sensitive teeth, TMJ, gum disease, bruxism, or even a sinus infection.

Decaying Teeth Aren't The Only Cause Of Toothaches

Sensitive teeth will not respond well to certain food or drink temperatures, sugary foods and drinks, or sometimes the peroxides in whitening toothpastes. Our staff can help you in choosing the right toothpaste for your sensitive teeth, and also what foods and drinks to avoid. TMJ, or Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, which is caused by clenching the jaw and grinding your teeth, puts a lot of pressure on the jaw, which leads to pain in your teeth. People often don't realize they are clenching their jaw. It can be happening in stressful situations or even during sleep. There is hope though! Our office can help diagnose TMJ and also help you to remedy it. Bruxism, similar to TMJ, but only involves the grinding of teeth. Teeth grinding can also go unnoticed as it often happens during stressful situations and during sleep. The pressure in your mouth from teeth grinding, can lead to misalignment of the jaw and tooth pain. Another possibility which can be discovered during an exam in our office, is gum disease, or periodontal disease. Gum disease is a bacterial infection of the gums, and sometimes involves the bone surrounding a tooth or teeth. This infection will certainly lead to pain in the teeth.

Non-Dental Pain

Since our Maxillary sinuses sit on top of our jaw, (under our cheek bones), a sinus infection can cause pain in our teeth, due to the swollen sinus cavity. Don't settle for tooth pain. Our staff can help evaluate your tooth pain with an exam, which can confirm or rule out possible tooth decay, TMJ, gum disease, bruxism, or sensitive teeth. Call to schedule an appointment and rid yourself of tooth pain.
