How Sticky Foods Cause Harm to Your Teeth

Posted on 3/10/2019 by Dr Jonathan Ford
How Sticky Foods Cause Harm to Your TeethPlaque is a soft, sticky film that builds up on your teeth. It contains millions of bacteria that can cause tooth decay and gingivitis, which is the early stage of gum disease. When you don't follow a regular oral healthcare routine, you put yourself at risk of all these things.

How Sticky Foods Cause More Plaque

Sticky foods tend to linger longer on your teeth. As it does so, it continually grows harder, making it more difficult for us to remove. This is why it's a good idea to avoid sticky foods, no matter how good for you they may be. For instance, raisins are known to contain a lot of acid that causes additional damage to your teeth.

Popcorn, citrus foods, dehydrated fruits, PB&J, and ice (especially when you're chewing on it) are examples of other healthy foods that can also do this to your teeth. Of course, there are also some unhealthy foods you'll want to avoid for this reason, like soda, hard candy, alcohol, potato chips, coffee, and tea.

Preventing and Treating Plaque

Besides avoiding sticky foods, you also need to eat a healthy diet and follow proper oral health care etiquette - brushing with a soft brush twice daily, flossing at least once daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash. Make sure you also visit our office once every 6 months to have your teeth checked and cleaned.

Once you do develop plaque though you'll want to have it removed through periodontal scaling and root planing. These processes remove dental plaque and tartar which is where the bacteria lives in your mouth. After conducting the procedure, we will polish your teeth and they'll look good as new again.

When you need help or advice with any of these things, make sure you reach out to set up an appointment with our office.
