Why the Corners of Your Mouth Often Crack and How to Correct ItHaving split, bleeding corners of your mouth can be highly uncomfortable and even embarrassing. It could impair your ability to eat, and you may feel as though people are looking at the side of your mouth instead of at you when you're talking to them.

Many people suffer from a condition known as "angular cheilitis" or "perleche" but very few understand what causes it or how to address it. Fortunately, this condition is both highly preventable and highly treatable.

What is Angular Cheilitis and Why Do I Have It?

A skin condition that causes painful inflammation in the corners of your mouth, oftentimes leading to cracking or bleeding, angular cheilitis is quite common and easily remedied. Fortunately, its duration is generally very brief, ranging between just a few days to a few weeks.

Cracks in the corner of your mouth are often caused by:

•  Topical Irritation: If you have a sudden onset of cracks and bleeding, take a hard look at any new toothpastes, lip balms, creams, or cosmetics that you have recently introduced.
•  Dehydration: Most people do not get the recommended 64 ounces of water they require each day, which can lead to dry, chapped lips and splitting of the corners of your mouth.
•  Changes in the Weather: Extreme weather fluctuations can also lead to a split corner of the mouth. Cold, dry weather can be especially harsh on delicate skin.
•  Diet: Eating a healthy diet, ensuring that you're getting all of your vitamins and minerals, can help stave off this unpleasant condition.

What Can I Do About It?

If you have angular cheilitis, don't stress! You can get rid of the irritation relatively easily and get on your way in no time!

To reduce the irritation of this condition, you can:

•  Switch toothpastes or lip balms to one without irritating ingredients.
•  Drink lots of water and eat a healthy diet.
•  Apply aloe vera gel and petroleum jelly to the irritated site.
•  Employ an antifungal cream to knock out the underlying infection.

You shouldn't have to suffer from the pain and embarrassment of cracks in the corner of your lips. If you're struggling with bleeding and irritation in the sides of your mouth, give our compassionate and professional office a call for an assessment and we can help you find the relief that you seek!
