It's Better to Visit a Dentist Sooner Rather Than Later

Posted on 4/11/2022 by Dr Jonathan Ford
It's Better to Visit a Dentist Sooner Rather Than LaterThere is a misconception that whatever happens in the mouth won't affect the rest of the body and vice versa. That isn't the case. Every action in your mouth reaches your entire body. The health of your mouth influences the health of your body as a whole. Furthermore, more and more evidence confirms that diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer's, and heart disease are directly related to tooth decay and gum disease. It is for this reason that regular dental exams serve as an effective whole-body preventative and detection tool. If you get there sooner rather than later, you are likely to be healthier.

Diabetes and Heart Health

Diabetics have to contend with the double-edged sword of gum disease. Diabetics stress every system of their bodies. Your blood sugar level affects your ability to fight infections, including gum disease. Gum disease can also make it difficult for your body to regulate your blood sugar levels. Gum disease increases the risk of a heart attack, stroke, or another catastrophic cardiovascular event by two to three times. What's not clear is whether this link is direct or indirect. Continued studies reveal that gum disease, inflammation, and the body's immune response are very real contributors to declining heart health.

Tobacco Use and Cancer

Almost all of us are aware of the effects tobacco use has on the lungs. Yet tobacco isn't the only victim of tobacco use. In addition to staining your teeth permanently and doubling your risk for tooth loss, tobacco use increases your risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. As with cancer, cancer therapies can also be fatal. There are many treatments that can negatively impact oral health by causing dry mouth, sores in the mouth and throat, as well as painful gums. Cancer patients will want to include the dentist in their treatment protocol. Adding an infection to a body already fighting cancer will make it weaker.
