Dental Recommendations During Pregnancy

Posted on 11/22/2021 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Dental Recommendations During PregnancyThe organic changes that occur during pregnancy can affect the dental health of our precious pregnant patients, leading to greater risks of tooth decay and gum diseases, such as gingivitis. These complications appear with hormonal changes, such as high estrogen and progesterone, the presence of "cravings," and an increase in untimely meals, as well as the presence of nausea and vomiting. Keep on reading to learn everything about dental care during pregnancy so you can have a lovely smile to receive your baby.

Home Care For Pregnant Patients

The main thing is a balanced diet, both for the mother and the baby, low in sugary foods, which will help prevent tooth decay. They must maintain rigorous dental hygiene; brush twice a day, use high in fluoride toothpaste, floss every day, and fluoride tooth rinses.

During the vomiting period, it is common for some pregnant patients to avoid brushing because it can cause nausea, for this, we recommend you wait at least an hour after eating to brush and avoid toothpastes with a strong flavor. After the first months of pregnancy, when vomiting eventually decreases, you can return to your normal dental hygiene. To stimulate saliva production and avoid dry mouth, you can chew sugar-free gum or increase your water intake.

Goals Of Dental Care During Pregnancy

We always aim for prevention. We focus on reinforcing the mother's healthy habits and guiding her in the oral health care of the unborn child. During the first trimester of pregnancy, we limit dental treatment to periodontal prophylaxis. In the second trimester, we can treat active oral pathologies, and in the third trimester, we can safely perform scaling and root planing. Dental care and attention during pregnancy benefit both the mother and the child, so we invite you to consult our offices for more advice from our dentists.
