Signs You May Have Tonsil Stones

Posted on 8/9/2021 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Signs You May Have Tonsil StonesDo you have small white or yellow hard balls in your mouth from time to time? These could be tonsil stones. Tonsil stones are small lumps of hardened bacteria or debris that form in the crevices of your tonsils. The debris hardens or calcifies into a tonsil stone. These stones usually don't cause serious health problems but can be a nuisance when you find them lingering in your mouth.

Symptoms of Tonsil Stones

Your tonsils are found on either side of the back of your throat. Your tonsils are lymph glands, and they help the body fight infections. Unfortunately, tonsils can also house tonsil stones.

Smaller tonsil stones may not cause any symptoms. Larger tonsil stones, which are less common, will usually present noticeable symptoms. For instance, a common symptom of tonsil stones includes bad breath. Bacteria and fungi feed on the buildup of debris in and around your tonsils which can cause a distinct odor.

Perhaps you have a sore throat or trouble swallowing. These could also be symptoms of tonsil stones. If you have ear pain or an ongoing cough, it is important to consider the possibility that you may be developing tonsil stones. If you can look at your tonsils in the mirror, and you see that they are swollen, or they have white or yellow debris on them, these signs could be symptoms of tonsil stones.
