Posted on 4/12/2021 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Gingivitis is caused by bacterial infection and results in an inflammation of the gums. If it is not treated in a timely manner, it can develop into a more serious infection called periodontitis.

Food debris can combine with saliva and bacteria to form dental plaque, which a sticky film covering the surface of your teeth. If plaque isn't removed by regular brushing, it can turn into tartar and cause irritation in your gums. Here are 4 DIY methods to get rid of gingivitis:

[[[H2Salt Water Treatment]]]
Salt water rinse is an effective technique for treating gingivitis. Salt acts as a natural disinfectant that enables your body to heal by itself. Simply dissolve ½ or ¾ teaspoon of salt into a glass of lukewarm water. Swish the solution inside your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. Repeat 2-3 times daily for best results.

[[[H2Homemade Mouthwash]]]
Although there are several over-the-counter mouthwashes available in the market, you can get equally good results using a homemade mouthwash. Lemongrass, aloe vera, tea tree oil, sage and guava can be used to concoct different kinds of mouthwashes to rinse your mouth with.

[[[H2Turmeric Gel]]]
Turmeric is a household spice which is well-known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. According to research, it is effective for preventing plaque and gingivitis. You can easily find turmeric gel in health food or alternative remedy stores. Apply the gel to your gums and leave it for 10 minutes before rinsing and spitting.

[[[H2Oil Pulling]]]
This technique involves swishing oil inside your mouth for 20-30 minutes. It is used to get rid of toxins and bacteria to improve oral health. Take 2 teaspoons of oil in your mouth, swish it around, and spit it out. Finally drink a glass of water before brushing your teeth.
