Problems with Flossing Too Roughly

Posted on 10/19/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Problems with Flossing Too RoughlyFlossing is a crucial part of any oral hygiene routine. Flossing is the only way to get food particles, plaque, and troublesome bacteria out from between your teeth, an area toothbrushes can't reach. Flossing, if done correctly, keeps your teeth in great shape and gum disease at bay. However, it is possible for some people to get too enthusiastic when flossing their teeth, which can actually cause adverse effects on your dental health. Here are a couple symptoms of flossing too roughly.

Receding Gums

Flossing too aggressively can cause gum recession, which is where the gums pull away from the teeth. Specifically, if you pull floss too hard, you can catch the floss on the edge of your gums and cause the gums to begin pulling away from the roots of your teeth. This damage can cause your gums to bleed and recede from your teeth, as well as possibly open the door to dreaded gingivitis. Always be sure to firmly but gently pull floss between your teeth, being sure to not catch the floss on your gums. If your gums begin receding, you may be flossing too roughly.

Gum Inflammation and Bleeding

If you experience inflamed gums during or after flossing, you may be flossing too hard. Flossing should be a painless and simple process. Some people get too enthusiastic about flossing, which can result in your gums getting inflamed. This is identified by swollen red gums which are often tender and accompanied by some bleeding. Always floss only once a day and very gently as to not damage your gums or teeth. Floss should not dig into any area of your mouth, only remove pesky food debris and plaque.

If done properly, flossing is a great way to keep your mouth healthy. If you're concerned about flossing too hard or have either of the symptoms above, please call us to set up an appointment today.
