Dangers of Drinking Too Many Sports Drinks
Posted on 10/5/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Dangers of Drinking Too Many Sports DrinksSports drinks can give us the extra energy we need at the gym or during an intense training session. However, with this extra energy comes a cost, as these sports drinks have ingredients that can be damaging to the teeth, particularly if you drink them frequently. Not only can sports drinks be harmful for the teeth, but they can also be damaging for your general health.

Why Are Too Many Sport Drinks Bad For You?

Sports drinks are both highly acidic and sugary, a detrimental combination for your tooth enamel. Sugar can encourage the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, and increase the amount of plaque and tartar built up. Plaque and tartar lead to tooth decay and gum disease, so limiting the amount of sugar you consume can keep your teeth healthy. The acidity of sports drinks damages the teeth by breaking down the enamel. Some sports drinks are known to be particularly acidic and can even break down your enamel faster than carbonated sodas. This leads to an increased chance of cavities and tooth decay.

This wearing down of enamel makes your teeth prone to staining. Staining can come from the sports drink itself, if it is vibrant in color, or other foods and drinks you are consuming around the time. Sports drinks can also make your teeth more sensitive, which you will encounter when eating hot or cold foods, like soup or ice cream. Sports drinks can have effects on your general health, such as weight gain, due to the amount of sugar they contain. Sports drinks can be ideal for training and during sports games, but they should be used in moderation and only when undergoing extensive exercise. Otherwise, you risk damaging your health from overconsuming sports drinks. To find out more about how to improve your oral health, contact our office now.
