What We Look For When You Come In Following Dental Trauma
Posted on 9/21/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Any type of dental trauma should be treated by us immediately to prevent further injury or serious complications. When you come in, we will examine your condition to determine the best treatment option and explain the prognosis to you. We will first look for signs of infection and check to see if we can save your tooth. We can give you more information about first aid and other dental trauma treatment options.

Signs of Infection

Depending on the extent of your dental trauma, infection can set in very quickly. You may also be experiencing trauma as a result of infection. This is one of the most important issues to resolve immediately because infection can travel throughout your body, damaging organs and making you very sick. In general, signs of dental infection include severe pain or sensitivity, swelling, redness, pus, and fever. The first step in treating this is cleaning the wound of any pus and sanitizing it to eliminate bacteria. After this, our dentist will likely prescribe anti-biotics and explain any wound management needed.

Ability to Save the Tooth

We are also going to give a thorough examine of your condition to determine if we can save your tooth. This is not always possible, especially in the case of serious infection or extensive damage. In this case, without extracting the tooth, you could experience difficulty breathing, speaking, and eating. You could also be at risk of further injury or infection.

If we do need to extract your tooth, we will explain the procedure to you as well as recovery instructions. Our dentist will also explain restorative treatment options available, such as getting a crown or dental implant to mimic the natural tooth. Call us for more information about dental trauma signs and treatment.
