Come in Right Away if Flossing Begins to Hurt

Posted on 9/7/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Come in Right Away if Flossing Begins to HurtFlossing daily is an essential part of good oral care. However, our patients may struggle with this step if the act of flossing causes them pain. Pain while flossing has many possible symptoms, but our team can address all of them with an examination, a treatment plan, and possibly some education in the case of improper flossing. When our patients experience pain either during or after their daily flossing, they should call our office so we can address and hopefully remove the pain.

Oral Care Issues Associated with Flossing Pain

Incorrect flossing technique can lead to a painful experience. As is the case with brushing, flossing correctly requires being gentle instead of aggressive. Teeth that hurt after flossing can be sensitive. Possible causes for a tooth's sensitivity include reduced enamel, a crack in the tooth, and an exposed root. Bleeding gums after flossing is a symptom of gingivitis. Dental restorations loosening and exposing roots can also lead to painful flossing sessions. Flossing after getting braces or a permanent aligner adjusted can also lead to pain during or after flossing. Tooth decay between the teeth can trigger pain when the floss touches the decayed part of the tooth. Any of these reasons are sufficient reason to contact our office for an exam and a treatment plan.

Alternatives to Traditional String Floss

When the cause of flossing pain is improper technique, replacing string floss with an alternative is a potential solution. Single-use floss picks are plastic picks with a small strand of floss. The patient maneuvers the pick to floss between their teeth. A water pick is a machine that disperses bursts of water between the teeth, removing food and other materials from between the teeth. Many water picks have multiple attachments and other means of reaching each gap. Air flossers operate similarly to water picks by using a constant stream of water and air to remove debris from between teeth. Call our office immediately if you encounter pain during or after flossing.
