Does Your Oral Health Impact Your Risk of Stroke?

Your oral health is just as important as your physical health, but why is that? And does it link to other parts of your body?

Your mouth is something that you use every day and is the gateway to your overall wellbeing. If you eat right, your oral and physical health will be on track. And if you practice oral hygiene, you are preventing bacteria from infecting your mouth. This bacterium is something that can affect your body if gotten out of hand- it could even lead to a stroke in extreme circumstances.

The Connection Between Oral Health and Strokes

It may sound outlandish at first that oral health could be linked to a stroke, but it all comes down to your body's response to infections that happen in your mouth. Periodontitis and gingivitis have been linked to blood clots that cause ischemic strokes because both of them fall under gum disease- an infection that happens due to poor oral health. As a result of this infection, your body has an inflammatory response that can cause blood to clot, resulting in a stroke.

How To Improve Your Oral Health

To prevent life-threatening occurrences from happening in an otherwise healthy body, it is important to start with your oral health. Good oral health involves avoiding smoking tobacco, brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and practicing healthy eating habits. You will feel better physically, your smile looks and feels better, and you won't have to worry about all the consequences caused by poor dental hygiene!
