Can Gum Tissue Regenerate on its Own?

Posted on 6/22/2020 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Can Gum Tissue Regenerate on its Own?Unfortunately, unlike the other tissues of your body, like skin, gum tissue does not grow back or regenerate on its own. Receding gums, once they're pulled back and away from the teeth, will not grow back, this is why if you have receding gums, we will likely recommend that you have gum grafts to restore the missing tissue.

Why Gum Grafts?

When gums recede from the teeth, whether it's heredity periodontal disease or as a result of poor oral hygiene, they expose too much of the tooth. The receding gum leaves little holes and pockets around the base of the tooth unprotected and these become perfect little hiding spaces for plaque, tartar and bacteria. Once the gums recede and the bacteria begins to thrive, this can cause excessive damage to your teeth and even your jawbone, resulting in losing teeth and bone mass.

Gum grafting is a surgical procedure that involves taking tissue from the roof of the mouth and then grafting it to the affected gum area. Because your gums can't regenerate on their own, they need to be replaced in order to protect your teeth. When gums recede due to gingivitis, they leave the roots of your teeth exposed and this makes them more susceptible to decay and even tooth loss.

Prevention Is The Best Treatment

The best way to treat receding gums is to prevent them as much as possible in the first place. Avoid vigorous tooth brushing, as this can cause the gums to pull back. Brushing twice daily and flossing at least once per day can also help prevent periodontal disease. Smoking and tobacco use can also accelerate gum recession and should be avoided. If you do use tobacco and you're interested in quitting, talk to our staff, we have lots of ways to help you through that transition.

If you think that your gums may be receding, give us a call today and we'll schedule a checkup for you soon!
