Do You Need Straight Teeth for Optimal Oral Health?

Posted on 8/15/2019 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Do You Need Straight Teeth for Optimal Oral Health? There are many things that people imagine when talking about a perfect smile. They talk about bright, white teeth and they talk about straight teeth. If teeth are not straight people will say that the smile is not perfect.

Not having a perfect smile because of teeth that are not straight is one thing, but you may also wonder if not having straight teeth means you do not have good oral health. This is a question that our offices can help answer.

Why Teeth are Not Straight

There are many reasons why your teeth are not straight. Hereditary and bad habits can lead to crooked teeth. Crowded teeth due to the teeth being too big or the jaw being too small can lead to them not being straight. Teeth that are missing can cause the other teeth to become misaligned. Bad habits such as thumb sucking are a common reason people end up with crooked teeth.

The Importance of Straight Teeth

Straight teeth are important for a variety of reasons. For many, the most important impact of teeth that are not straight is their appearance. People with teeth that are not straight may find it hard to smile and it can affect them emotionally.

While appearance is an important reason for straight teeth, there are other oral health issues associated with it. People with teeth that are more likely to have cavities and other oral health issues. This is often because they are not able to brush their teeth effectively due to gaps or teeth that are too close to each other. Straight teeth are less susceptible to dental trauma and injury and they don't experience as much wear and tear.

No one likes the thoughts of wearing braces to straighten their teeth, but there are plenty of ways to do this that are much easier than they were in the past. The benefits of straight teeth are worth the temporary inconvenience it takes to achieve them.
