|Before you get any replacement surgery, be it a joint or hip surgery, you have to be cleared by a dentist. The doctors have to be sure that you are free from gum disease beforehand.
If you go ahead with a replacement surgery while suffering gum disease, your new replaced part is at risk of getting infected.
Infections Pose a Problem
Bacterial infection in the mouth, such as gum disease, does not only remain in the mouth. Medics will tell you that any bacteria in the mouth will quickly spread to the rest of the body. With gum disease, the bacterium goes through the affected gums and into the bloodstream. Once in the blood, the infection spreads to every tissue in your body.
Gum Disease Is Treatable
Periodontitis (gum disease) can compromise your body's immune system. Research shows that gum disease increases your chances of having heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, kidney problems, Alzheimer's and high blood pressure. This is because the bacteria build-up in the gums can cause blockage in some arteries, making them narrower.
Based on an article published in 1994 in the British Medical Journal, it is ubiquitous that patients with prosthetic joints suffer an infection because of bacteria that got into their body system through the mouth. In many cases, the dental disease might not show any signs or symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. You should get a comprehensive dental screening to confirm that you have a healthy mouth before any replacement surgery.
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, 75% of American adults have gum disease. A vast number of them have either undergone a replacement surgery or will get one soon. Keiser Permanente National Joint Replacement Registry estimates that by 2030, 4 million of hip and knee replacements will have been performed.
To minimize extensive infection, book an appointment with us for a dental examination and treatment if needed before all replacements. This also ensures swifter recovery from the operations because the immune system is uncompromised.
