Oral hygiene is very important for many different reasons. It can defiantly impact your overall health. It's a good idea to keep a regular routine to keep that perfect smile, and just feel good all the way around.

Sometimes life can get crazy and you may miss opportunities to brush your teeth, but you can look for things to stay away from when those times come up. Here are some things you should avoid if you want to cause less damage to your teeth.

What Causes Acid Damage to Your Teeth?

Making sure you brush twice a day, floss, and use mouthwash are great ways to keep on top of your oral hygiene. Doing all this at appropriate times can also be important to monitor. Knowing what you are eating and drinking is key. You have one set of teeth, besides your baby teeth, that are meant to last a lifetime if taken care of properly.

Things that have a higher acid content can soften your tooth enamel. Soda, even diet, has a high amount of acid. Drinking through a straw can help avoid so much contact with your teeth. You may think drinking fruit juices are a better option, but that isn't necessarily the case.

Orange juice has a very high acid content, so maybe look for the low acid option if you love orange juice. Try to stay away from beer and hot chocolate, they also have high levels. Water is the best option if you're going to be out and about and won't be able to brush for a while.

Eating spicy food can cause you to have heartburn, which can cause acid damage to your teeth. It's a good idea to stay away from foods with sugar or that are processed. Keeping a balanced diet can help you in so many ways. It's usually recommended to know your portions to balance everything out. If you're going to cheat, make sure you stop and make time for your teeth.

Wait 30 minutes before brushing, because brushing right away can cause more damage. Talk to us about different food qualities to look for to keep you at your optimal health.
