Porcelain Dental Crowns

When a tooth needs restoring to its former strength and capability, our team wants to ensure that they look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Crowns are used when a tooth does not need to be completely removed but requires enough restoration to have a porcelain cap placed on top. Ford Dental Group uses porcelain crowns that look almost identical to natural teeth to give patients the confidence to smile without worrying about the appearance of their mouths.

Why Should I Have A Porcelain Crown?

One of the biggest benefits of a porcelain crown is that a well-placed crown will restore the cosmetic appearance of a person’s smile. Our porcelain crowns can not only be matched in color to the rest of the remaining natural teeth, but they also give off the same gleam, making them the most accurate replication of a natural tooth. Furthermore, porcelain crowns fit snugly in the oral cavity, so they look and feel natural.

Crowns restore a tooth’s strength; chewing and talking should become easier after a crown is placed. Crowns can take the pressure off of natural teeth as they become a functioning asset to the oral cavity. The removal of the decayed parts of a tooth prevents the further spread of tooth decay within the oral cavity and improves the overall oral health of the mouth. Furthermore, porcelain crowns can be used to shape protruding teeth, or teeth at awkward angles. This is beneficial in cases where a patient wants to correct the shape of their dental arch without having braces.

What Is The Procedure For Having A Porcelain Crown Placed?

First, the patient will meet with our oral surgeon who will talk the patient through the procedure. The patient will decide on the shade of color used for the crown’s resin, and our oral surgeon will check the patient’s mouth for any other abnormalities that may need to be resolved before the placing of the porcelain crown, such as bone resorption or periodontitis.

During the procedure, the oral surgeon will apply local anesthesia to the patient. The affected tooth will be thoroughly cleaned to prevent bacteria from being trapped under the tooth after the porcelain crown is placed. The oral surgeon will then file down the tooth. This will remove any tooth decay and prepare it for the placing of the crown. Then, measurements will be taken for a custom-fit porcelain crown and sent to a dental lab for the crown’s production.

In the meantime, our oral surgeons will place a temporary crown. After two weeks, the patient will return to have the temporary crown taken out and for the custom-fit porcelain crown to be placed. The oral surgeon will check the crown for any discrepancies before placing it. There will be some sensitivity for a time after it has been placed, but the crown should last 15 years with good oral health care such as brushing twice a day and flossing daily.
