Why Is Keeping Your Lips Healthy Also Beneficial for Your Oral Health?

Posted on 7/20/2019 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Why Is Keeping Your Lips Healthy Also Beneficial for Your Oral Health? When people think of their oral health, they probably think of the overall status of their teeth, gums, and tongue. Some may include the insides of their cheeks or the top of their mouth.

However, most people don't think about their lips, probably because they are outside of the mouth. Having healthy lips, though, is actually very important to your overall oral health.

The Dangers of Cracked and Chapped Lips

Healthy lips are moist and soft. They help you speak, help you eat, and are a sensory organ that makes things such as kissing feel good. But when they become cracked and chapped, they don't function as well as they should.

Cracked lips may hurt, plus these cracks can serve as an entrance for bacteria and debris. You can even get an infection from chapped lips if you're not careful. This infection can then spread throughout your body, affecting your oral health and overall physical health.

How Do You Keep Your Lips Healthy?

The main way of keeping your lips healthy is to keep them hydrated. Your lips start to crack and chap when they're not hydrated properly, which is why it's important to drink a good amount of water during the day.

If you live in a climate that affects your lips, you may want to invest in a good lip balm. Do your best to only use all-natural lip balms, however, because some do contain ingredients that aren't great for your lips or your body.

Lip balms and wetting your lips with water is actually much better than licking your lips. Experts have found that the saliva in your mouth can actually irritate your lips and increase chapping, so you need to find external ways of moisturizing.
