Reasons to Ask About a Nighttime Mouth Guard

Posted on 3/20/2019 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Reasons to Ask About a Nighttime Mouth GuardYou have probably seen athletes wearing mouth guards. It makes sense for a football player to use one. They need to protect their teeth while playing a sport that is often violent.

But what about non-athletes? Is there a need for someone to use a mouth guard that is not engaged in a sport that outs their teeth at risk?

It surprises some people to find out that a nighttime mouth guard can help with a variety of problems. Learning the things that a nighttime mouth guard can help with may convince more people to ask about them.

Nighttime Mouth Guards and Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding and bruxism are common problems that many people suffer from without realizing it. Many people suffer from these conditions while they sleep. They do not realize that they are doing it because they are not awake.

While people may not realize they are grinding their teeth while they sleep, they will eventually find out unless they do something about it. That is because, the problem of teeth grinding and bruxism can lead to many different problems with oral health.

Problems a Nighttime Mouth Guard Prevents

There are several symptoms of teeth grading and bruxism that a nighttime mouth guard can help with.

These include:

•  Headaches - People who grind their teeth while they sleep often wake up with a headache.
•  Teeth Wear - Grinding the teeth can cause erosion of tooth enamel and eventually can wear the teeth down to a nub.
•  Damaged Teeth - Grinding teeth while sleeping can cause cracked, chipped or broken teeth.
•  TNJ - Teeth grinding can lead to problems with temporomandibular joint disorders.
•  Pain - A common symptom of teeth grinding is tooth pain.

The good news is that a nighttime mouth guard can prevent all these things from happening. Of course, they only work when you wear them every night.
