Options for Treating Early Stage Gum Disease

Posted on 10/15/2018 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Options for Treating Early Stage Gum DiseaseGingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, and it involves a build of plaque and bacteria along the gum line. This causes the gum inflammation, and the gums will bleed easily during brushing. At this phase, irritation is apparent, but the teeth are still planted in their sockets firmly.

Fortunately, there are ways to treat early stage gum disease before it has a chance to advance to the more harmful periodontitis.

Improve Your Brushing Technique

The best way to reverse the effects of gingivitis is to start brushing better. You need to brush at least twice a day, and a simple 30 second scrub isn't going to cut it. You should brush for at least two minutes per session, paying close attention to the gum line. This is where much of the toxic plaque and bacteria will accumulate.

Floss Daily

Daily flossing is also important to combat gingivitis. Flossing removes food particles that are caught between the teeth. This is a major source of food for bacteria, and simply brushing may not access this portion of the mouth.

Add a Mouthwash into Your Oral Hygiene Routine

An antibacterial mouthwash can also help to treat gum disease. This solution can access plaque bacteria that are hiding in hard-to-reach spots, reducing the early signs of gingivitis.

Visit the Dentist

Professional cleanings are also important if you have the early stages of gum disease. Your hygienist will remove more plaque than you can on your own at each visit to our office, and with the use of specialized tools, tartar can also be blasted away. Our dentists are also trained to identify early symptoms and signs of gum disease, helping you to get ahead of the issue before it gets worse.

Is it time for your next dental cleaning? If so, give our office a call to schedule your next appointment. We look forward to seeing you.
