Top 3 Reasons to Consider a Ridge Augmentation

Posted on 9/15/2018 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Top 3 Reasons to Consider a Ridge AugmentationIf you have to have a tooth extracted, we may talk to you about having a ridge augmentation done at the same time. This common procedure replaces some of the bone that can be lost when a tooth is removed. In most cases, the empty socket left behind when a tooth is removed heals on its own over time. Your body naturally fills it in with tissue and bone.

Sometimes, though, that doesn't occur. This leaves you with space that will deteriorate over time. Generally, though, that's okay. Ridge augmentation is rarely medically necessary. However, there are a few reasons why you may want us to go ahead and do this simple procedure.

It's Often Necessary for Implants

If you're considering dental implants, a ridge augmentation may be necessary to provide enough bone to support the implant. The bone grafted into the socket will provide you with enough of a foundation to hold the single dental implant or one of the posts for a four-on-one implant system.

It Looks Better
Depending on where the extracted tooth was, the space may be very noticeable. Even if you plan on having implants or getting dentures later on, you may want the space to look as good as possible now. Ridge augmentation will help ensure that the gum area around the missing socket doesn't look uneven or otherwise doesn't match the rest of your gums.

It's Difficult to Clean
Finally, it can be more difficult to keep a socket clean if it has deteriorated. This can create little areas that are very difficult to reach with a toothbrush. With a ridge augmentation, that won't occur. You'll be able to keep the area just as clean as the rest of your mouth, so you won't need to worry about developing gum disease or other issues around the empty socket.

A ridge augmentation is usually done at the same time the tooth is extracted, and it's a quick and easy procedure. If you'd like to know more, give us a call today.
