What to Do If You've Bitten Your Cheek

Posted on 8/23/2018 by Dr Jonathan Ford
What to Do If You've Bitten Your CheekIf you've ever accidentally bitten your cheek while eating, you know how painful it can be. Most of the time, fortunately, biting your cheek isn't that bad.

It will hurt, but the pain usually doesn't last for very long. There's usually no permanent damage to the cheek, either, so you don't need to come see us for any emergency treatment.

Why Does it Happen?

Biting your cheek can happen for a number of reasons, but usually the culprit is misaligned teeth. If the teeth aren't aligned properly, it's actually pretty easy to catch a bit of your cheek between them when you bite down. In fact, some people bite their cheek often because of this. That's when you need to see us so we can help you deal with those misaligned teeth.

What Do You Do when it Happens?

If you bite your tongue, the first thing you should do is look in a mirror to see if you're bleeding. If you are, rinse out your mouth with plain water. You should be able to see if the cut is fairly minor or if it requires more immediate attention. If it's minor, it should stop bleeding soon. You should also wash your mouth out with mouthwash.

For bites that continue to hurt, you might find some relief from ice. Hold ice against the bite or swish cold water around in your mouth. You can also take over-the-counter pain relief. Using an all-natural peppermint oil is also effective since the oil can both help with pain and has antibacterial properties. The skin of the cheek will absorb the oil quickly, so it won't be washed away by your saliva or by drinking.

If the bite is worse or if it continues to bleed or hurt for an extended period of time, you should give us a call to schedule an appointment. It's possible you may need stitches or other treatment.
