What to Do if You Have Tetracycline Stains on Your Teeth

Posted on 8/13/2018 by Dr Jonathan Ford
What to Do if You Have Tetracycline Stains on Your TeethTetracycline is a prescription medication used to treat various infections like acne. Unfortunately, it can become calcified in your teeth. When this happens, it will stain your teeth.

This is especially true for children whose teeth are still forming. Fortunately, there are various ways we can treat these stains on your teeth today. Two of the most effective options include porcelain veneers and "deep" bleaching.

Treating Tetracycline Stains with "Deep" Bleaching

Deep bleaching is different from standard bleaching because different trays and agents are used for each of these types of bleaching. Over the counter bleaching treatments won't work in this case because your teeth are too severely stained that you'll need help from a professional at our office.

Sometimes we'll suggest you also bleach your teeth at home, but this should never be the sole way you use of correcting your teeth's discoloration from Tetracycline. Home bleaching treatment also needs to be supervised by us so it's effective and doesn't cause unnecessary sensitivity.

Treating Tetracycline Stains with Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are your other great option here. These are thin pieces of ceramic that are placed over your front teeth. They're attached with specialized resin. One drawback is that we'll probably need to remove a small amount of your enamel first.

Otherwise, we'll use Lumineer veneers, but we only choose this method when enamel re-contouring is necessary. This is important because these veneers can look somewhat bulky if not done properly.

Choosing the Right Treatment for Your Tetracycline Stains

Both these treatments can be given by a dentist in our office. We have experience treating tetracycline stains. You should see a dentist in our office, so the treatment you choose does not cause more staining or unexpected problems. So, make sure you give us a call today, so we can start working on returning your bright white smile to you.
