Does Everyone Need to Get Their Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Posted on 7/10/2018 by Dr Jonathan Ford
Does Everyone Need to Get Their Wisdom Teeth Removed? For many teenagers, removing the wisdom teeth is a rite of passage. It is something that everyone seems to do. However, there are many times when the wisdom teeth don't need to come out, so your dentist should review the pros and cons of this operation before you pursue removal.

When Should Your Wisdom Teeth Stay in Place?

Wisdom teeth removal is a surgical procedure that requires sedation, so if it isn't necessary, it should be avoided. There are several instances where the wisdom teeth may not need removal:

•  Wisdom teeth that are healthy.
•  Teeth that have fully erupted, or grown in completely.
•  Teeth that can easily be cleaned with brushing and flossing.
•  Teeth that are in the correct position.
•  Teeth that don't affect the position of any surrounding molars.

While the wisdom teeth often cause problems and require removal, there are plenty of people out there who are living with four, fully functional wisdom teeth.

Consider the Side Effects of Surgery

Still, even some people who have functional, painless wisdom teeth consider removal. In these cases, you should talk to your dentist about the risks of the surgery versus the benefits of extraction. While surgical risks are generally quite low, some possible side effects include:

•  Swelling.
•  Pain.
•  Bleeding.
•  Infection.
•  Tingling of the lips and mouth.
•  Numbness.

These risks tend to increase later in life, which is a driving argument for advocates of early removal. The best advice if you find yourself in this situation is to talk to an experienced dental professional who can examine your unique wisdom teeth. This should give you a guideline on the best possible solution.

If you have a teenager at home, it is important to have his or her wisdom teeth examined. Call us today to set up an appointment. We'll help you decide if removal is a necessary step in your future.
